Pat Gibson wins World Quiz Championship
Lathikka Niriella re-esatblished his position as the top Sri Lankan Quiz player when a record number of Sri Lankan Quizzers competed

with the world’s best in the 11th Annual World Quizzing Championships, at the DLC Auditorium at SLIDA, Malalasekeara Mawatha, Colombo 7 – last Saturday 1st June.
England’s Pat Gibson reclaimed his crown as the 2013 World Quizzing Champion with an enormous score of 172, four points ahead of his nearest rival, Finland’s Tero Kalliolevo. Kevin Ashman another Englishman was placed 3rd in the world with a score of 163.
Haren Fernando, was placed 2nd best in Sri Lanka while Dilantha Gunawardena was the third placed.
Pulasthi Rupasinha and Chamara Sumanapala were placed 4th and 5th respectively and this year too Hasini Minuwanpitiya and Nipunika Wijayaratne were the top two female quizzers

The World Quizzing Championships, held for the 11th consecutive year, is an individual Quiz competition, conducted by the International Quizzing Association (IQA), the world’s premier Quiz organization. The quiz consists of 240 questions, to be answered in a maximum allowed time of 120 minutes. Questions are divided over 8 categories of 30 questions each. The eight categories broadly cover areas of History, Media, World, Lifestyle, Entertainment, Culture, Sports, and Sciences.
Eight nations were represented in the top 10 ranked Quiz players in the world and in Sri Lanka the competition was worked out at the Distance Learning Centre at SLIDA building, Malalasekara Mawatha Colombo 7 with Ruwan Senanayake, the Country representative of International Quizzing Association conducting it.
Tough questions to tackle..
It was a notable feature that some of the Sri Lankan participants came from far away places such as Galle, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya despite the inclement weather on the day of the quiz and three of the quizzers who took up the challenge were just 15 year old students.
The Management Club for the fourth year in succession joined IQA Sri Lanka in supporting its endeavour of providing the local quizzers the opportunity of battling it out with the world’s top Quiz players. Sponge Pastry shop joined hands with TMC in supporting this knowledge development initiative.
