The University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) is now enrolling students for the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) degree programme, said Prof. Gihan Wikramanayake, the Director of this premier institution of higher studies.

“We will be enrolling our 14th batch of students this time. The BIT degree course was launched in the year 2000. Since then, we have produced 1,200 BIT graduates. These graduates are employed in leading companies in Sri Lanka and overseas and are drawing substantial salaries. At present, there are around 7,000 job openings in Sri Lanka’s Information Technology sphere. Therefore, BIT graduates will not face any difficulty in securing productive employment”, Prof. Wikramanayake said.

Students who have passed three subjects in the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) examination can register for the BIT degree programme of the University of Colombo School of Computing, while students who have obtained lesser qualifications than the basic educational criterion of three passes can register for the Foundation in Information Technology (FIT) programme, he explained.

Students registering to follow the BIT degree course get access to all the UCSC learning material allowing them to learn online. There are a large number of registered and recognized private sector ICT-related institutions throughout Sri Lanka which conduct classes for the BIT degree programme. It is also possible to enrol in one of these institutions, follow classes and complete the BIT degree programme, he said.

The Self Study mode helps those who cannot attend regular classes either because they are engaged in full-time employment with busy schedules or for some other reason. The University of Colombo School of Computing facilitates all students to engage in learning and read for the BIT degree programme through the internet, Prof. Wikramanayake noted.

“Students who successfully complete the first year of the BIT external degree are awarded the Diploma in Information Technology which is a productive qualification for those employed as well as for job aspirants”, he said.

Students who successfully complete the second year of this degree programme are awarded the Higher Diploma in Information Technology and those who successfully complete the full three years of the study programme qualify for the BIT external degree.
He said that at present many government and private sector educational institutions conduct degree programmes in the computing, but what is noteworthy is that the preferred choice amongst IT students is the BIT external degree conducted by the UCSC where over two thousand new students enrol each year.

The University of Colombo is the pioneer in introducing internal and external degrees in the computing sphere in Sri Lanka.
The Human Resources Development external degree in the computing field, which was first launched by the University of Colombo, as it was considered a dire necessity at the time, has now earned national and international recognition.

The BIT degree has been tailored taking into account the present and future needs and demands of the IT and BPO industry. The course is on par with internationally accepted standards.
