Two students – a brother and sister from Kegalle, were this week praised for their act of returning a parcel of money, they found, to the owner.

The two students Erandi Madushika of Year 4 and Kavindu Sampath of Year 8, of Perakum Maha Vidyalaya, Dedigama, Kegalle, were the students who came in for praise for their honesty, as the parcel of money containing Rs 28,000, belonged to a woman who was taking it for an eye operation.

The two students were returning home when they had seen the parcel falling off a three-wheeler. They had picked the parcel and found it contained money and documents with the name of the bank on it.

They had taken the parcel to the Rural Bank of Dedigama and returned it.

The Bank Manager had contacted the owner of the parcel, who came and collected the cash.

The owner, a woman, Gunaratne Menike, 76, said she had withdrawn the money from the pension she received from her soldier-son who was killed in a terrorist attack.

“Our father is a bus conductor, and usually, we have seen and been told of instances where he has found purses, cash, bags etc left behind by passengers, and handed them back to the owners. Our teachers too, have told us that if we find something to hand it back to the owner”, Madushika said.

Primary school Principal Wasantha Kumara Mapa said that he was happy about the act by the two children.
