To become an accredited gemmologist, one should obtain qualifications from an internationally reputed gemmological organization. When obtaining a gemstone report it is important to check that it has been issued by a reputable, independent gem testing laboratory and certified by gemmologists qualified from an internationally reputed organization.

Many of qualified gemmologists also have jobs within the gem and jewellery trade, whilst others aim to enter the trade directly, into retail, valuations, appraisals and buying and selling. Popular organizations in gem and jewellery trade wish to employ gemmologists to improve their internal and international trade activities.

To become an accredited gemmologist, one should successfully complete a Diploma in gemmology, from an internationally reputed organization. Passing Gem-A (Gemmological Association of Great Britain) and become elected to FGA status is the internationally highest gemmology qualifications to receive, where excellent observational and interpretive skills are needed and meet the real challenge in gemstone testing and identification.

Allied Gemmological Institute & Laboratory is the Accredited Centre in Sri Lanka, under ATC network of Gem-A which provides facilities for gemmology courses. This system helps the students to obtain qualifications with least expenses when compared to courses of other organizations. This institute has been established in 1999 by Dayananda Dillimuni, a Consultant Gemmologist and is fully equipped with all teaching aids and instruments to conduct teaching programmes according to the specification required by Gem-A.

Gemmology Course of Gem-A has to be completed in two units- Foundation Certificate and the Diploma courses, and the examinations are held at the British Council Centre in Colombo in agreement with Gem-A.

From this year, Gem-A Gemmology Diploma has been reaccredited by Ofqual, the regulator of qualifications, examinations and assessments in England who have repositioned the newly updated course as a Level 6 qualification — making it one of the few gemmology qualifications equivalent to undergraduate or bachelor degree level. This centre also conducts a basic Gemstone Identification & Valuation Course, for those engaged gem industry or trade, and also in related other fields such as jewellery making, banking etc. This is a useful course also for expatriates to make use of their stay in Sri Lanka.

New Gem-A courses will be started in the 1st week of July, 2013. Inquiries from Allied Gemmological Institute & Laboratory at 46.2/B, Dias Building, Galle Road, in Colombo 03, Sri Lanka. Tele. 94-774 720 193. E-mail: dilli2@sltne.lk
