French spring festival come alive in Sri Lanka
‘French Spring Festival’, popularly known as the ‘Dawn of the summer season in France’ will come alive in Sri Lanka from 18 June to 14 July this year. Organised by the Embassy of France, the Alliance Française de Kotte in Colombo and the General Delegation of Alliance Française in Sri Lanka and Maldives, together with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Culture and the Arts, ‘French Spring Festival’ replaces the old ‘Fete De la Musique’, the first day of Summer in Europe.
This multi-disciplinary festival is free of charge and open to the public. It will be held from 18 June to 14 July in Colombo, primarily at the BCIS Auditorium in the BMICH premises and at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel. Some events will also be presented in Kandy, Matara, Galle, Jaffna and Male in the Maldives too.
This festival will present 12 events in various artistic fields such as music, dance, cinema, photography, street art, fashion and also in science, urban development, communication and gastronomy.
The French Spring Festival is organised by the French Embassy in Sri Lanka and the Maldives and the Alliance Française network in partnership with the BMICH, the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel and SriLankan Airlines, with the support of several other French and Sri Lankan companies.
The opening day will feature French German singing competition at the University of Kelaniya at 4.30pm. The Fete De la Musique fest will feature rock bands Julius, Paranoid Earthling and Stigmata. French Film Festival along with the French Food Fest at Cinnamon Lakeside will be the highlight of the Fest.
Fashion Show, French street artiste performance, De Cruz Street Art exhibition and Jean Pierre Baraglioli Concert and Caravan Quartet Concert too will come alive at the BMICH premises. ‘Bonsoir Diaries’, a book written by Kumar de Silva on Television programme Bonsoir will be launched at the Festival.
Contemporary Solo Dance show by Celine Predeu will also be a part of the fest. The ‘French Spring Festival’ have been organised annually for the past 20 years throughout Asia, with the aim of strengthening the cultural co-operation between local and French artists, sharing the same stage and working on common cultural projects.
The concept of this festival is to provide local audiences the opportunity of sharing in a high quality contemporary artistic experience. It is also an opportunity through which they can have access to greater scientific knowledge. French Festivals already exist in main capital cities in Asian countries such as Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta, Vientiane, Phnom Penh, Manila. The first edition ever of French Spring Festival in Sri Lanka took place in June 2012.
In Sri Lanka, this cultural festival will revive the cultural exchanges between our two countries. The Embassy of France in Sri Lanka believes that arts and culture create a great opportunity to improve exchanges between different cultures. Organizing events of this nature free of charge is meant to welcome a large audience from all communities who will share same emotions, side by side, in appreciation of each other’s culture.
