Kalutara Muslim Central a leading school of the area
Kalutara Muslim Central College is an eminent Tamil medium school in the Kalutara district well known for its excellence in the field of
education as well as extracurricular activities. As per the Education Ministry classification, it is an IAB category School and has classes from Grade 1 up to Grade 13 with the Advanced Level stream.
In 1918, Nakshabandiya Kaleeba Mohammed Mamooth with some other benefactors took an initiative to convert the “Kur-Aan” Madharasa” Religious School to a Tamil medium school with 150 students. Janab Marhoom M.M.Sultan’s name has been written in the history of the school as the first teacher principal of the institution. With the takeover of the school by the government in 1928, the College started functioning as a government school under the leadership of A.L.M.P.Mohemmed.
1951 was an unforgettable year for the College where 3 students succeeded in getting through the SSC Examination for the first time in the history of the college. With the establishment of the Muslim Ladies College in 1956, all the girls who were studying in this school were transferred and this school was converted to a boys’ school in 1957.
The Sinhala Medium section was inaugurated in 1970.
From the first principal onwards, several principals has given leadership to the Muslim Central College and Jajab Waris Ali Maulana who is presently serving as a principal at Weligama Al-Arapha Central College was a very successful principal at . Kalutara Muslim Central. He served for 18 years in this
school. During his era the college earned the status of Central College. After the establishment of the English medium section in 2002, Kalutara Muslim Central College at presently stands out as a leading school in the district providing education in all three languages.
With over 2000 students, 90 teachers, 5 trainee teachers and another 4 volunteer teachers, Muslim Central College has a highly complex administrative requirement. The present principal Mr.M.B.M. Muzzammil (BA, PGDE, PGDEM, MA) who was highly recommended by the School Development Committee for the leadership of the college after the transfer of Mr.M.A.M.Faris, has earned a reputation among the society for his dedicated service and the college excelled in both curricular and extracurricular fields after he assumed duty.
Since the inception they have developed well in the academic field and has produced successful results every year. They are proud to say that annually the pass percentage of the G.C.E.(O/L) has increased. In the Kalutara district, among Tamil medium schools, Muslim CC manages to retain a leading position in the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination.
Muslim CC is flourishing in skills in the field of sports, aesthetics, drama, Olympiad, Tamil day and many other co-curricular activities. Also the school has recorded many achievements. The school football team holds a dominant position not only in the Kalutara district but also in the whole island since 1993 after they emerged champions in the “Premadasa Champion Trophy”. The under 15 team emerged champions
in 2007. Two students were selected to represent the Sri Lankan team to against Iran in 2011. Success in the Zonal championship has been recorded by a student at the sports meet.
The college team won Gold and Bronze medals at the All Island Tamil reading competitions in the years 2007, 2008 and 2010. Many Muslim CC students enthusiastically participated in the 2011 “Spell Master”Competition and three of them has been selected for the semi-finals.
“Muslim Majlisil Programme” was grandly celebrated by Kalutara Muslim CC on June 6, 2013. Zonal Education Director Mrs.Nalani Abeywardana and Dr. M.Z.M. Malhardeen, Senior Lecturer- Department of Mathematics Faculty of Engineering graced the occasion.
Muslim Central College which is located in Kalutara, Sri Lanka is 93 years old and well- known all around the nation as well as in other parts of the world. There are many outstanding personalities among the past pupils who have created a long and unique history in the area.
