GFS Hall celebrates 90 years

View(s):

The 109 year old Girls’ Friendly Society will celebrate the 90th anniversary of its headquarters building with a thanksgiving service in the Hall this evening. This stately building was gifted to the Society by Charles Peiris in memory of his daughter Elsie who died at an early age. It was opened on June 23, 1923 by Rt. Rev. Ernest Arthur Copleston, then Anglican Bishop of Colombo.

It was completely renovated and restored in 2010. In keeping with Mr Peiris’ wishes, over the years the Hall has been used for various programmes for the betterment of the girls and women of this land, as well as for study, worship and leisure. The Hall is also used to generate a modest income to run the GFS Hostel for girls established in 1957.
