Sashi’s students present “Drama Quartet”
‘It’s not raspberry juice, it’s blood.’ This is the sentence which brought about the plot for the devised drama ‘Melon’ written by the students of Sashi Mendis. Sashi Mendis presents yet another one of her productions “Drama Quartet” at the Punchi Theatre on June 30 from 6.30 p.m. A well known drama teacher Sashi has been teaching for the past 12 years, staging many productions with her students. She conducts drama classes at Battaramulla and Kollupitiya.
On the bill are four plays – ‘Snapshots from “The Tempest” and an edited version of ‘Julius Caesar’ both popular Shakespeare plays, ‘Electra’ a Greek tragedy by Sophocles and ‘ Melon’ an original production by Sashi’s students -over 30 in number, her senior batch aged between 14-20.
“The cast has done well to portray the characters in the Shakespeare dramas. At this young age it takes a lot of courage and talent to understand and portray characters of this maturity,” Sashi said. “Melon’ came about somewhere last December. Sashi explains that in one of her classes for the age group 14-17, she gave the students an exercise where they had to produce a scene out of a given sentence. “When I read through everything the students had written, I thought it would be a great idea to put together all these creative ideas into a drama.
The improvised scenes were scripted mainly by Vickram Parathalingam, a 14-year-old student and by Sharukha Wickramanayake with a little help from Sashi. Tickets for the show are available at the Punchi Theatre. For further information contact Sashi on 0777009258.
