Leaders stay put while Colombo FC stuns Negombo Youth
View(s):Navy Sports Club snatched the leadership from Blue Star while Solid Sports Club remain on top for the third week running in their
respective groups as the Dialog Champions League 2013 football competition completed its seventh round this last weekend.
From Group ‘A’ unbeaten Navy SC marched two notches up to end Blue Star’s dominance of four consecutive weeks, after thrashing bottom seed Super Sun by a massive 5-0 at Welisara. The scheduled match between Blue Star and Matara City was abandoned to due inclement weather and as a result they lost their top position from the group.
Colombo FC gained two places in the table as they beat the strong Negombo Youth outfit by 6-1 in an away game, to move up from fifth to third. Ratnam lost to Air Force by 2-1 at City Football Complex and this resulted in causing them two notches as they were pushed down to fourth in the table. Java Lane beat Saunders by 2-0 at the same venue a day earlier and moved up a place to fifth while Matara City despite their game being abandoned was pushed down to sixth from fourth. Air Force’s win against Ratnam helped them gain two places to seventh as Saunders by losing their game against Java Lane, lost a place and moved down to eighth. Negombo Youth’s massive defeat at the hands of newcomers Colombo FC pushed them down to ninth as Super Sun still lingers without a win to their name at the very bottom of the table.
From Group ‘B’ newcomers Solid SC beat Nandimithra by 3-2 at their home ground in Anuradhapura remain as the only unbeaten team from the group. Solid SC is one of the teams to complete all rounds by now as they become the first team to near 20 points. Solid SC’s closest rivals Army SC who has all the potential to dislodge them again moved up to second place after crushing favourites Renown by 4-0 at Longdon Place. Upcountry Lions drew their game against Pelicans by 2-all at Nawalapitiya but lost one place and swapped places with Army SC to third position. Don Bosco lost their game against Kalutara Park by 2-1 in an away match but that could not make a bigger impact to their standing in the table. The team from Negombo remains at fourth position as Renown who managed to hold on to their place at fifth, despite losing to Army by 4-0. Police SC drew against New Youngs by 2-all at Wennappuwa and hopped a place to sixth as they exchanged places with Nandimithra who were beaten by table topper Solid SC. New Youngs’ drawn game against Police helped them remain at eighth while Kalutara Park progressed to ninth from the bottom after their win against Don Bosco. Pelicans’ win drought continues for the fifth week as they ran out of luck against Upcountry Lions and moved down to the bottom of the table.
