Lorenz Pereira furious at Haka push
Famed Royal sportsman, Lorenz Pereira, voicing his views on his school’s aggressive disruption of a Trinity College Haka during the second leg of the Bradby last week, expressed disgust at the brief confrontation, saying that it had brought the traditional encounter into disrepute.
“It was not warranted under any circumstances. The huge spectator presence was there to view good, hard-fought and exciting rugby, not a street fight. The coach and some players must be held responsible for this deplorable behaviour.” he said.
He went on to add that the incident threatened “the noble spirit of rugby,” something he stressed which should not be compromised.
Pereira was also displeased with the standard of rugby on display, stating that the game was scrappy with play often stagnating at the forward line.
“The forwards seemed to hold the ball far too long in the many phases of forward play. There appeared to be a considerable delay in passing the ball back to the threes. This provided the defense of each team ample time to regroup.”
The two teams clashed when the Trinitians began performing their own version of the haka, prompting the Royalists to walk up to their opponents and begin gesturing wildly and shoving some of them. The broken haka ended with the Trinitians marching forward and exchanging a flurry of pushes and tugs with their perennial rugby rivals, before the two teams eventually drew apart and got set for the match. Royal went on to win the game 13-9, but could not prevent Trinity from riding home with the Bradby after they claimed a decisive 37-25 first leg victory.
