The ‘Perahera’ of officials
View(s):The Perahera
A ‘perahera’ of officials are making arrangements to accompany the local team for an athletic meet to be held in Pune next month. At the time that this item was written the amount of officials stood at 25. Even the body in charge of these events is at a loss for words to say why so many officials are keen to make this trip. The saying goes that all of them have been invited by the organising country. Why are the organizers keen to have such a lot of officials from Sri Lanka? What’s the secret?
Having his own way
It looks as if all is not well with a sports body that has brought credit to the country at international level with their bursts of speed. The man at the helm, (so it seems) and also the man who is keeping accounts, has a habit of raising his voice at others and is not so popular. Those in this association are keen to get him out but cannot do so because of the power that he yields. Because of this he has a habit of having his own way.
Death threats
Three officials who are with the Citadel game keep saying that Death Threats have been leveled against them for the way they had handled the game in a neighbouring country last year. They are at a loss to say where these death threats are coming from. However they are keen on petitioning those who are threatening them ê but they do not know to whom these petitions should be addressed to!
Keen official
An official is keen to attend a camp organised by the big neighbouring country. He is so keen to attend this camp that he has even volunteered to pay for his own passage, up and down, and is ready to foot the bill for his accommodation as well! What could be the reason for his keenness to attend the camp? Only the official will know.
Gone out
Sri Lanka’s dismal showing at a competition played with a net and ball in Sri Lanka last year prompted officials to appoint a committee to inquire into the poor showing at the contest. The report is out at last and it clearly says ‘No Fault’. The body who appointed to probe into the poor showing is also at a loss for words. When contacted to seek a clarification on the matter, the person who answers the phone repeatedly says: “He has gone out”!
‘Hora Rahasa’
A coach of a popular sport who is not in favour of the association has been given a pool to train much against the wishes of the others. Why this ‘Hora Rahasa’ ask people who know about this coach and the game. Some people who yield a lot of power though they are not in the scene, still holds a lot of power and are in a position to dictate terms to those who are holding important positions.
