Swirls of Spring and Summer
View(s):Swirls of colour, flimsy fabrics, angel wings, lollipops and attached balloons. Not something you would wear every day?
But this is exactly what a group of aspiring young designers reading for their Bachelor of Design degree at the Department of Integrated Design, University of Moratuwa thought of, when given the challenge of designing two collections of “fantasy wear” for the seasons of spring and summer at the Chokolaate Fashion show 2013 held recently.
Majoring in Fashion and Lifestyle Accessory design, they presented their creations on the physical, emotional and cultural context of the two seasons.
“It’s not every day that you get to design fantasy wear, so we thought why not?” remarks Shobha, team leader of the ‘Summer’ group. Summer meant carnivals, laughing children, sweets, kites, wind and merry- go- rounds to them; and their collection was truly a feast to the eye as the costumes swayed to and fro as if caught up in the summer wind.
“The Queen of Spring, composed of drizzles of rain, a prelude of music, the break of silence after a gloomy winter was our theme,” says Buddipriya, who led the ‘Spring’ team. The colourful rainbow done in tie and dye drew gasps from the audience as the Queen of Spring stood radiant onstage, her arms outstretched.
Inspired by the work of designers such as Alexander McQueen, Paco Rabanne and Manish Arora the designers had worked hard to achieve the perfect mix of elements. From conceptual thinking and background research to the actual materialization on stage, they follow a ‘design process’, evaluating, re- evaluating and re- creating their own work.
