Holy Cross Kalutara staging walk for new pool
View(s):The Old Boys’ Association of Holy Cross College Kalutara has spearheaded a project to raise funds for their planned Swimming Pool Complex, which will be a first among schools in the area.
This project, which is a much anticipated requirement of the school, is led by the Rector of the school, Rev. Fr. Dr. Camillus Fernando. The committee, consisting of the OBA and the staff, has made plans to conduct the ‘Holy Cross Walk 2013’ to raise funds for the swimming pool project. The walk is to be held on July 21, beginning at 3.00pm from the college premises, with the participation of students, Old Boys, members of the staff, parents and well-wishers.
“Holy Cross College Kalutara, which is situated on top of the historic hill of Kalugamtota, has a proud history of 110 years. Holy Cross is one of the main schools in the Kalutara District and is the proud alma mater of Old Boys spread all over Sri Lanka and in foreign lands. The patronage given for the development as well as the welfare of the school by its Old Boys during the well-established history is commendable. Hence the OBA has taken the lead role in patronizing the swimming pool project which is the most wanted asset for the college today. It is a pleasure that the Rector of the school Rev.Fr. Dr. Camillus Fernado is giving leadership to the swimming pool project in order to make this dream a reality,” the OBA stated in an official media release.
Five engineers produced by Holy Cross are shouldering the bulk of the responsibilities for the project. Their contribution, which includes drawing of all the plans, has helped the OBA in going forward with raising the estimated cost of the project which is Rs.25 million in total. Optimistically, in an hour at the first fund-raising campaign for the swimming pool held at the College Auditorium, the OBA was able to raise a sum of Rs. 3.5 million in cash.
“On this day Old Boys individually and collectively donated Rs.1 lakh each to the project. The second phase of the fundraising campaign will be held on June 22 at 6.00 p.m. at Tangerin Beach Hotel where the Old Boys expect cash donations targeting Rs. 10 million. It is a victory for the Old Boys as several Old Boys are now getting ready to donate cash at the event. The OBA is hopeful that Old Boys who can afford will donate their funds to the project and show their gratitude and loyalty to our alma mater,” it added.
In addition to the fundraising project on June 22, a musical show featuring well-known musical group ‘Marians’ and ‘Bathiya & Santhush’ will be held on starting from 7.00pm. The OBA has attracted Sri Lanka Telecom and Mobitel as main sponsors of the musical show and the Holy Cross Walk.
“We are now in the process of connecting with all Old Boys who left college from 40 years of age at the much looked forward to walk, expected to draw a crowd of 5000. In addition to SLT Mobitel, well-known footwear company ‘Minuki’ has already consented for the Rs.2.5 lakhs ‘Silver Sponsorship’ while Stafford Motors has come forward as a co-sponsor,” the press release further stated.
The Old Boys are hopeful of sponsorships from the business community for the souvenir which will be printed for the walk and the musical show. The Old Boys association is hopeful of the help from the present boys, Old Boys, and members of the staff, donors, and all the business community in the quest to build a swimming pool.
