The cricketers of Cardiff Metropolitan University at the ICBT Campus triumphed over the visiting University of Manchester cricket team in a rain-affected limited overs game at the St. Anthony’s College ground in Katugastota on June 16. The outcome of the match, however, was decided on bowl outs after rain prevented play despite the encounter being reduced to a 40-overs per side game

The match was scheduled to be played as a standard 50-overs clash but with the intervention of rain, match officials decided to cut 10 overs from each side and made it a 40- overs per side encounter. A large gathering of spectators, mainly dominated by the students of ICBT Campus, was present at the venue but eventually the rain turned down a possible thrilling battle between two of the leading Universities from two different continents.

The match got underway with University of Manchester taking first lease of the wicket but they were soon in trouble with toiling for runs at 89 for 7 wickets after the completion of 25 overs. This was ultimately the only stage of the match that was played actively. With the rain not ceasing after a long wait, the match officials decided to determine the winner through a bowl out, where each team gets five chances to bowl at the unmanned wicket and the side to strike the stumps at most occasions walk away winners.

Two Captains, Ben Vatkin (University of Manchester) Udara Hettige (ICBT Campus)

At the end of five attempts each Cardiff Metropolitan University at ICBT recorded a commanding 5-2 win against the visitors. The victorious Cardiff Metropolitan University at ICBT was captained by Udara Hettige and University of Manchester was led by Ben Vatkin. Henry Comey of University of Manchester was adjudged the man-of-the-match and best batsman while Udara Hettige won the best bowler’s award.

University of Manchester is one of the oldest and leading Universities in the United Kingdom and their cricket teams of different levels frequently tour Sri Lanka. This time they played against selected teams such as Moors SC, CCC, St. Peters College and ICBT Campus. Cardiff Metropolitan University students Sri Lanka represented ICBT Campus and they were the only private sector institute to be invited to play against the visiting side.
