Navy Sports Club and Solid Sports Club continue to lead the two respective groups of the Dialog Champions League 2013 football tournament despite recording contrasting wins from their encounters played last week.

Navy SC who snatched the headship of the Group ‘A’ a week earlier from Blue Star, recorded a stunning 2-0 win against Ratnam at Longdon Place to maintain their stronghold. Next to the Sailors, who are the only lot without a defeat, is Colombo FC who thrashed Matara City by 4-1 at the Sugathadasa Stadium to hop by a notch in the same group. At third is Java Lane who handed Negombo Youth a 2-0 defeat at the City League ground in Colombo last weekend. Air Force fought hard to hand Blue Stars a thrilling 1-0 defeat which

cost the losers two places in the table. As a result Blue Star moved down to fourth from second. Following them is Ratnam who were beaten by table leaders Navy.

Saunders meanwhile regained momentum by thrashing the besieged Super Sun outfit by 4-0 at Kelaniya and moved two notches up to sixth as Air Force remain at seventh despite their stunning win against Blue Stars. Matara City who suffered their second loss in the competition also lost two places in the table and loved down to eighth as Negombo Youth and Super Sun linger at the bottom of the table for yet another week.

From the Group ‘B’ in spite of tasting their first defeat Solid SC remains to be the leader. Their winning streak came to an abrupt end at the hands of bottom seed Pelicans who won the match by 2-1 at Maligapitiya in Kurunegala. Army marched towards their fifth win of the season when they thrashed Police by 3-1 at Police Park and is well set to challenge Solid’s existence as leaders of the group. Following them at third place are Upcountry Lions who lost their match against New Youngs by 2-0 at Wennappuwa, but they have managed to cling on. Renown moved up to fourth after beating Don Bosco by 2-1 at Negombo while Nandimithra gained a rapid move to fifth from seventh after beating Kalutara Park by 3-2 at City Football Complex on Friday.

At sixth is Don Bosco who had to concede two places and move down after being defeated by Renown. Then comes New Youngs who managed to move up by a slot to seventh after beating Upcountry Lions. Police who suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Army also lost their possession and moved down to eighth. The stunning win against table leaders Solid enabled Pelicans to move up to ninth place as Kalutara Park replaced them at the bottom of the table. The first round of the DCL 2013 ended this week. The second round of the DCL will resume after a month’s break. – NA
