Ranabima Royal wins inaugural Knockout baseball championship
View(s):Ranabima Royal Baseball Club clinched the inaugural Sri Lanka Telecom National Knockout Baseball Championship 2013 which ended at the University grounds in Colombo last Sunday. Ranabima Royal BC beat Old Royalists Baseball Club at 14-4 in the grand final.
Champions Ranabima Royal also carried four of the five main individual prizes on offer. Ranabima Royalists Supun Abeysooriya, Krishna Hapuarachchi, K. Jayaratne and Krishna Hapuarachchi won the Most Valuable Player, Best Hitter, Best Pitcher and Player-of-the-Final awards respectively. Old Royalists player Akalanka Ranasinghe won the Best Fielder’s award.
The third place playoff was won by Maroons Baseball Club who got the better off Army Sports Club at 10-2. The tournament which was sponsored by Sri Lanka Telecom concluded on Sunday (June 16) was held at the Colombo University ground on all playing days. Altogether 25 clubs took part in the competition. Sri Lanka Navy who appeared in the tournament for the second occasion, almost
pulled off after displaying their fighting skills. They played the match of their lives and stopped the hearts of almost all the supporters of eventual winners Ranabima Royalists who clinched the game by 6-5 after a cracking battle. Ranabima Royal went on to finish as champions of above Old Royalists BC in front of a large gathering of spectators.The awards ceremony was held soon after the finals and the President of the Sri Lanka Baseball Association Kalinga Indatissa and Roshan Kaluarachchi, Chief Marketing Officer of Sri Lanka Telecom graced the event.
Kalinga Indatissa appointed Chandrishan Perera, former Sri Lanka rugby wing-three-quarter, coach and widely regarded fitness trainer to the teams as fitness-in-charge of the Sri Lanka Baseball squad. Next on cards in the baseball calendar will be the newly introduced Sri Lanka Baseball Classics 2013, which will be conducted among six teams that comprises the best players in the country. – NA
