View(s):

The prestigious Harcourt’s International Girls School originated from Crescent School, which was founded in 1983. The school is located on a campus sprawling 100 perches, located off Anderson Road in Dehiwala. This gives students an environment conducive for learning and extra-curricular activities while still being within city limits, conveniently accessible from the major towns of Nugegoda, Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia and other major cities. The school constantly keeps itself updated with the modern times and being true to this quality recent developments of the school include a secluded swimming pool, and large spacious buildings that accommodate the rapidly growing student population. Other facilities on campus include a library, science and computer laboratories equipped with the latest technologies that offers students the very best facilities to complete their education with great success and excellence that can only come through the thorough understanding of the theories and practical components of the subjects. What makes Harcourts International Girls’ School unique is that in addition to giving students the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the world of employment, being girls they are also endowed with skills and knowledge that will help them to manage their homes effectively as well. A skill that is relevant for girls, especially in the modern world – while keeping them firmly rooted in the religious teachings of Islam.
The vision of the school is to ‘offer students an education of quality and relevance that ensures all-round development aiming to produce individuals with socially desirable qualities and high intellectual skills, encompassing the Islamic framework of life’. All classes are conducted in English medium for classes from Pre-school to IGCSE ordinary level and continuing on to London (Edexcel curriculum) or local advanced level examinations offered in commerce and science streams. As students who are able to contribute positively to the betterment of the community and country as a whole, it is very important for students to learn the local languages, thus it is compulsory for students to learn either Sinhala or Tamil as a second language while Arabic is offered as an additional language. Students are also offered optional subjects at primary level, including Physical education, art, life skills, elocution and singing.

Harcourt’s International Girls School, understands the additional importance of education in the formative years. Thus the primary school is especially focussed on developing the child’s mind, skills, attitudes and abilities as these factors are essential to form the right perception within them as older students and giving them a proper appreciation of higher education. A greater role is played by the teachers, who are vital in the effective delivery of the study material. All teachers are qualified as class and subject teachers and are competent in delivering classes in English medium.

The management of the school takes special care to maintain a child-friendly and child-centered teaching-learning environment.
The school really does inspire all students to reach their highest potential, the teachers pay special attention towards students who may need additional time to understand the concepts fully, the dedicated teachers conduct free-of-charge after school sessions to enable these students to be the best that they can be. The current school principal is Mrs. Faleela Be Jurangpathy, while Mrs. Faiza Haniffa is the principal of the Pre-School.

Co-curricular activities are an integral part of the life of any student. Several additional activities are developed, co-ordinated and implemented in the school this includes netball, badminton, and table tennis and swimming as sports; while Little Friends and Girl Guides function under the guidance of experienced Girl Guides Commissioners.

Harcourt’s International Girls School is dedicated towards developing and inspiring excellence within its students, who will be confident citizens, employees and women in the future.

Joanne Kotelawala.
