Mercury Institute holds successful “University of London Open Day”
View(s):Mercury Institute of Management that is synonymous with imparting high quality education to the Sri Lankan market recently held a “University of London Undergraduates Open Day” for their University of London Undergraduate degree titled “ Discover your future”.
This value added event was aimed at prospective students who wished to undertake degrees from the University of London as well as students at other institutes who wished to transfer to Mercury for their studies.
The open day at Mercury gave attendees the opportunity to meet some of the current members of the lecture faculty and hear about how exciting and rewarding the student experience is at the Institute. It also gave an insight into Mercury, the degrees they offered and the manner in how Mercury can better prepare students to face exams as well as the career options that would be available for students post completion.
The programme included many speakers who were leaders in industry that consisted of Mr Hasantha De Silva , Finance Director at Stretchline Holdings Group .Hasantha who has also been a lecturer on the University of London degree programme where he specialized in the subject of Financial management , touched on the topic of students needing to understand the importance of getting a degree from an accredited body and institution so that it ensures that your degree will be recognized by employers for the true achievements they are. He also added that in order to progress up the career ladder it is essential to supplement a degree with a professional qualification such as ACCA. He also shared valuable insights on how prospective employees should present themselves at interviews. Mr.Lasanga Abeysuriya who heads the Corporate Finance and Strategy Consulting practice at the PwC offices in Sri Lanka and Maldives also endorsed this viewpoint and added that “In today’s competitive marketplace, the advantages of having a globally recognized business degree such as the University of London have never been more evident. A graduate with such a degree has a surefire opportunity for future advancement in their career. In today’s tight job market, non-degreed professionals struggle just to make ends meet, while degreed professionals with a recognized qualification have the option to make themselves more marketable. He added that PwC being a consultancy strongly valued recognized credentials as they are a business that is client focused.
Another speaker at the programme was the well known entrepreneur Mr.Reeza Zarook ,who was instrumental in setting up and successfully running Anything.lk, Sri Lanka’s first and now number one social media marketing company. He emulated the importance of having the right attitude at work and explained that “ being successful in business is due in large part to your mindset. He pointed out that whilst professional skill and connections can take you far, if you lack a personable demeanor, you may find success to be out of reach. He went on to say that “Every successful businessperson has a well-cultivated and implemented business attitude.Professional advancement is dependent on your ability to deal with other people, because all businesses readily involve personal interaction to some degree and therefore having a good business attitude was an essential pre-requisite for success in the business world today. ”
Speaking of the success encountered at the open day , Mr.Shaan Jayasekera the head of Academic Studies stated that “ We at mercury take pride in having built a reputation for creating work ready competent professional who are assets to the organizations they choose to serve . We always believe in adding value to our students and the open day “ Discover your Future” was aimed at achieving this.
The event gave the opportunity for students and parents to understand the value of undertaking a quality undergraduate degree such as the degree conferred by the University of London and the opportunities it provided , the respective degree programmes on offer. hear from eminent speakers on job prospects and how to achieve success in the corporate world alongside having all doubts and misnomers being cleared.
