Tissa Central moves along successfully
Tissa Central College, situated in Kalutara North is the largest mixed school in Kalutara town. It was inaugurated as one of the central
colleges among 54 under the Central College concept of the Hon. C.W.W. Kannangara. The school is situated in the calm and quiet surroundings adjoining the Kalutara-Horana main road. The road separates the primary section to the south and the major section of the school to the north.
The whole extent of the school is almost four acres. The Primary section consists of four buildings. A special area is reserved for disabled primary students of the same grades. The major section of the school consists of nearly twenty five buildings which are designed around the spacious play ground.
The history of the school runs twelve years before Sri Lanka gained independence. It was inaugurated on November 5, 1936 on a small land near Summithrarama Maha Viharaya Kalutara North, and Kalyani Weerawardana was fortunate to be its first student.
The school functioned in the same premises for nearly four years and the number if students increased rapidly. The necessity of sufficient space for the school was felt thoroughly at that stage. A famous philanthropist W. Alson De Silva donated the land where the school is presently situated. During the development of the school it was taken over by the Government on June 30, 1945. After becoming a government school, several improvements took place and the school anthem was composed courtesy of Nimal Welgama.
The school was upgraded as a Central Collage in quick time and in 2007 it was upgraded as a National School with the name change: “Tissa Central National School”.
Presently the school is boosted with modern facilities including a computer unit, a fully equipped library, a sports pavilion, sports rooms, music, dancing and technical studies.
Tissa CC is now commemorating 77 years of academic excellence, having a student population of more than 3100, a tutorial staff of nearly 110 and more than 23 non-academic staff. The Principal at present is Mr. Mithripala Liyanarachchi who was appointed as the Principal of Tissa CC in 2011. He has a lot of experience and has been guiding the College in the path of success. For the 75th commemoration of the school, Mr. Mithripara introduced the “Punarodaya” Development Programme to the
administration and the OBA is now functioning with the permission of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The BOA of Tissa CC, especially OBA 2011/13 which is efficiently backed by Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Mr. Wimal Weerawansa, who is an old boy of Tissa Central College. Mr. Weerawansa is a strong force behind the present developments of the school and he has donated a two storied building which has been operating as a dental clinic to the whole area. It was declared open by the President Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa.
As a leading school in Kalutara, Tissa Central College has performed exceptionally in the educational field. They enjoy a considerable percentage of university entrants annually. The 2012 G.C.E. (O/L) results brought them a remarkable success as 90% passed which has far exceeded the national rate. Tissa CC has turned out several important past students to the society such as Engineers, Doctors, Teachers, Lawyers and politicians over the years.
Tissa plays a major role in sports and aesthetic fields as well. Over the years Tissa students have been able to represent the Sri Lankan schools netball team for Malaysian and Australian tours. Hansani Arosha participated in the Malaysian tour in 2010 and the Australian tour in 2011. Senani Palika, has done well in netball and athletics. She captained the Sri Lankan schools netball team during the Malaysian tour in 2012. Senani Palika has been selected for a foreign tour this year as well. She undergone training with the Netball National Team pool in Colombo.
Tissa students have also been able to witness outstanding
performances in the fields of chess, cricket, badminton, football, volleyball, netball and athletics. The softball, under 19 team emerged western province champions. The badminton team won the all island championship while the chess team were placed second place at the all island contest last year. In the field of aesthetic studies the school has acquired a remarkable growth.
With a proud history and with better and brighter things to come, Kalutara Tissa Central College is moving ahead successfully.
