Wet and gusty weather in coming week says Met. Dept.
The Department of Meteorology forecasts enhanced rainy weather conditions in the coming week in the southwest of the country, with wind-speeds going up to 60 km/h. However, officials pointed out that this spell of rainy weather will not be as devastating as the inclement weather on June 8 that left 51 fishermen dead and eight missing, when wind-speeds reached a maximum of 80 km/h in Nuwara Eliya and 60 km/h in Ratmalana.
Met. Dept’s Weather Forecasting Director S.R. Jayasekera said the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Western Provinces, along with the Galle and Matara districts, will be affected by next week’s spell of monsoonal weather.
Meanwhile, the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry says the prices of fish in the country are returning to normal, following a hike that came in the aftermath of last month’s inclement weather along coastal areas in the southwest of the country.
“There was a shortage in fish stocks in the aftermath of the recent inclement weather, hence the increase in prices. Even the arrival of tuna fish from outside the country was delayed in the weeks that followed,” Minister Rajitha Senaratne stated.
The ministry’s Media Secretary Narendra Rajapaksa said the availability of fish stocks is now returning to normal, with former prices expected to be restored by next week.
