“Praveshi”, a sitar recital by Visharad Tania Karunaratne and Visharad Dinuka Samith Weerasinghe will be held on Wednesday, July 10 at 6 p.m. at the Indian Cultural Centre auditorium, 16/2, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 7.
Tania Karunaratne and Dinuka Samith Weerasinghe completed their degree in Music from the University of Visual and Performing Arts, Sri Lanka under the guidance of Dr. Nirmala Kumari Rodrigo. Both are also music students of the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo.
An evening of drums and music
Celebrity drummer and dancer Ravibandhu Vidyapathy and his dance ensemble present a musical and dance performance at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 12 at the Indian Cultural Centre, 16/2, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 7.
Ravibandhu Vidyapathi who hails from a long line of traditional dancers and temple painters, had his training at the Chitrasena School, where he studied classical Kandyan dance under the legendary dancers Chitrasena and Vajira and drumming under the renowned Piyasara Shilpadhipathi and Punchiguro. In 1984, Ravibandhu established his own dance school, the Ravibandhu-Samanthi Dance School. Currently, he is the Artistic Director of the Sri Lanka State Dance Ensemble and does choreography for the Sri Lanka Youth Dance Troupe. Putting his own stamp on the short operas in Sri Lanka, he expanded rhythm and orchestration and has successfully presented his creations on the international stage.
Ravibandhu is known for combining the Sri Lankan Getabera with Western music. His first opera ‘Thunwenna’ was staged in 1984 and he has also created other operas based on classics such as “Romeo Juliet”, “Theweni Vyasanaya”, “Thrushna” and “Yudden Mihidanwu Daruwan”.
