The rugby team of S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia claimed major honours by retaining the prestigious Michael Gunaratne Trophy after winning the Under-20 Schools Traditional Rugby match played against Royal College Colombo recently at Havelock Park.
Despite the Thomians winning the plum, both schools produced mixed results in their junior games as their future rugby stars displayed their potential in other games played prior to the main encounter.

The Thomians dominated the main encounter to win the game 29-20 but Royal had consolation earlier on when their Under-18 side registered a 14-5 win. This was after both schools played gallantly to settle for a nil-all draw in their Under-16 clash. Meanwhile, Royal won the Under-14 encounter played between the ‘A’ sides of both schools with a thrilling 7-nil win but earlier on in the clash between their ‘B’ sides both Royal and S. Thomas’ scored 7 points each to end things with a draw.

S. Thomas’ dominated the juniors’ age categories as they went on to win the Under-12 ‘A’ match by 14-7. The ‘B’ clash between the two Under-12 sides too ended with a similar result. S. Thomas’ again went on to register a smashing 30-0 win in their Under-10 ‘A’ encounter but only after Royal had handed a 30-0 thrashing to their ‘B’ side of the same age category. – NA
