An interactive app (application) allowing users to learn English on their smartphones, created by Sri Lanka’s zMessenger, has been selected as the only local finalist in this year’s SAARC-focused mBillionth Awards South Asia, according to a statement by the developer. Further, it was also noted that this app, called “Learn English with the British Council”, was one of a select group of finalists chosen out of a total of 209 applicants, with the winners slated to be announced on July 18 at Nehru Place in New Delhi, India.

Additionally, the statement also noted that this app allows for the learning of “conversational English using technologies such as SMS, Interactive Voice Response (IVR) and Video, by providing essential language learning tips for all levels of learners. The service then let’s British Council language experts [provide] feedback to users on their performance. ‘English with the British Council’ is currently offered by Dialog, Mobitel, Etisalat and Hutch”.

Also emerging, according to Upekha Abeyratne, Product Manager at zMessenger, quoted in the statement; “75 per cent of the subscribers are out of Colombo in areas such as Jaffna, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee, Vavuniya, Ampara, Badulla, etc.”
