Once the mercenary armies left, the soldiers who were left behind and soldiers of Samarakoon, were left to support the Portuguese. Later all of them left. They reached Ganetenne without any trouble. But the following day, they had to face an enemy attack early in the morning.

They retaliated by fighting back and then left the place. They came as far as Aluthnuwara that same night and rested a little. They left the following morning and gradually reached Attapitiya on the third day. They proceeded to Thalampitiya and stayed there for three days.

One regiment of soldiers was stationed there. The fortress there was then strengthened. General Azavedo retreated through the Four Korales. One group of soldiers from Kandy, were blocking his way and creating trouble.

Another army attacked from a side. Yet others attacked from behind. It is amidst all these obstacles that the Portuguese were able to retreat as far as Menikkadawara. The fortress there was strengthened. From there, they marched to Ruwanwella.

When they reached Ruwanwella, the rebels had captured both Ruwanwella and Sitawaka. But the army that retreated was able to seize some of their fortresses there and bring them under their control. Necessary repairs were done and a security force was also stationed there.
