The historical Ehellepola Walauwe that served as the remand prison for many years will no longer house prisoners, as it is to be restored to its old glory.

A scroll was presented yesterday to President Mahinda Rajapaksa by Prisons and Prisons Rehabilitation Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera, to mark the end of the administration of these premises on Raja Veediya, Kandy by the Prisons Dept.
The Asgiri Mahanayake, Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakita Thera, administered pansil at this ceremony and seth pirtih was chanted by the Maha Sangha.

The President, speaking on the occasion, said that the Urban Development Authority (UDA), which will take over the building, will have the arduous task of restoring and maintaining the premises.

He said that, as the building was used by the Prisons Dept, it has been well maintained, and not suffered the fate of other Walauwes in Kandy.

Among those present at this function were Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, Sports Minister Mahindanda Aluthgamage, Mass Media Minister Kehliya Rambukwelle, former Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Prison Rehabilitation Ministry Secretary G.S. Vithange, DIG M.M.G.B. Peramune and Prisons officials.
