Now, a 6 lane bridge to ease increasing traffic on new Kelani bridge
View(s):A new six-lane bridge, parallel to the existing new Kelani bridge is to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 45 billion to reduce traffic congestion around Peliyagoda area. Traffic congestion at this location is expected to get worse with the opening of the Colombo – Katunayake Expressway (CKE) by the end of this year and the expansion projects of the Colombo Port and Port City.
According to the Ministry of Ports and Highways, the future traffic demand is expected to exceed the capacity of the existing new Kelani Bridge and the new 6-lane bridge will help to ease the expected bottle-neck jam.
The average daily vehicular traffic at Colombo entry points are A001– 90,548, A000-72,101, B062 – 34,210, A003 – 47,079, B435 – 25,339, A002 – 62,917, A004 – 44,182, B084 – 38,970, B152 – 13,531.
This bridge with a design speed of 60 kilometres an hour will act as an entry point to Colombo central area, access point to the Katunayake Airport and a major Kelani River crossing point .
