Chanaka awarded Douglas de Silva Scholarship
View(s):Chanaka Perera, a 19-year-old schoolboy from D.S. Senanayaka College Colombo received the Douglas de Silva Scholarship awarded for the Most Promising Young Golfer for 2013/14, at the Royal Colombo Golf Course on July 8.
The award is presented jointly by the Sri Lanka Golf Union President, Lal Dias and the son of Douglas de Silva, Dilhan de Silva. This scholarship was the brainchild of his two sons Dilhan and Herin de Silva.
This year along with Chanaka, two other emerging golfers Chalitha Pushpika and R. Sureshan were also considered among the final three for the scholarship. Eventually Chanaka was picked as the recipient, taking into consideration his current handicap of two and his commitment to the game.
Douglas de Silva was a keen golfer. He was involved in many charity initiatives and helped promising golfers to reach the top, even as a player. His father, Timothy de Silva, interestingly was the first amateur golfer from Sri Lanka to win the local Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship, the world’s second oldest amateur golf tournament, in 1923.
The presenters of the scholarship, the de Silva brothers, want this to be a catalyst for many more individuals and companies to give more scholarships to young golfers who are economically less privileged.
