Industrial BIT from OpenArc CAMPUS – A ground-breaking reality
View(s):OpenArc Campus brings a new dimension to higher education in IT in Sri Lanka by making their graduates “employment ready” long before their graduation. The journey to excellence started with the Industrial Diploma in Software Development (IDSD) which was delivered excellently for many years. Many of the Industrial Diploma Students exceeded all expectations in their academic studies as well as in their work placements. Students, with just six months of rigorous full-time training in hard and soft skills became competent enough to work in many areas of software development such as; Banking, Finance, Securities and ERP solutions. Three of such students performed exceptionally well in the last’s (2012) Bachelor of Information Technology exams offered by the University of Colombo, with two receiving “First class” and one “Second Lower Class” passes. Therefore it was a natural transition for OpenArc campus to offer a full-time Industrial degree level programme (iBIT) for those who do not want an extra year of studies and job placement.
Traditionally, at OpenArc Campus it has been an established practice, to evaluate the internal higher educational programmes, by checking how ready a student enrolled for the programme, is, for real-life projects by the end of the first year of studies. This is because the Campus was established for the primary purpose of providing highly skilled IT personnel to its parent organization – OpenArc Systems Management (OSM). Such standards considered nearly impossible in the educational industry, however, were a basic requirement at this long established and highly regarded Institution. The very reason for the existence of OpenArc Campus was to make the graduates employable while they are still studying says the Chairman of the OpenArc Group Mr. Daya Hettiarachchi. Until now the central appeal for any degree programme has been how long it takes from graduation to become suitably employed. We have changed the measure of a degree to the highest by asking how soon can a graduate become employable from the time of enrolling for the degree.
OpenArc Campus has made such innovations in education possible as it works in close partnership with its Parent Software Company OpenArc Systems Management (OSM) Through this integrated approach the Campus is able to continue to provide a genuine “work experience” along with excellent academic programmes to make the graduates truly “work ready” long before their graduation ceremony. Thus “OpenArc Graduates” continue to celebrate the success of their academic achievements with a quick succession to a highly paid career reserved for the best.
