K.M. Nimesh Bhagya and P.G. Nirmali Madushika of Kathaluwa MV were adjudged champion male and female athletes at the Southern Province Schools Athletic Championships which concluded at the Uyanwatta Stadium.

Overall boys’ champions, Richmond College Galle

Richmond College Galle won the boys championship with an aggregate of 87 points while Rahula College Matara was second with 80 points and Mahinda College third with 70 points.

Rajapakse Central College Weeraketiya retained the girl’s championship with an over helming 112points. Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda was second with 68 points and Vijitha Central College Dikwella a close third with 64 points.

Ten new records were established and one equaled this year. O.M. Induranga Sathsarani of Vijitha Central College Dikwella equaled Sachini Chamika Edirisinghe’s record of 27.5 seconds for the 200 meter event for girls under 15. She also bettered the 63.2 second record established by S.H. Sithara Udayangani for the 400 meter event with a time of 61.3 seconds. B.G. Chamindu Bimsara of Rahula College Matara clocked 22.8 seconds in the 200 meter event for boys under 17 to erase the 22.9 second record established in 2001 by B.M.S.M. Safran of Zahira College Weligama.

Richmond College Galle bettered their own record of 3:36.9 minutes for the 4×400 meter relay for boys under 17 established in 2005 by clocking 3:36.1 seconds. G.G. Wasana Sampath of Vijitha Central College Dikwella 72.3 seconds in the 400 meter event for girls under 17 to erase the record of 82.3seconds established in 2010 by R.G. Lumesha Priyadarshani of Rohana KV Matara. Naduni Lochana Nilaweera of St. Mary’s Convent Matara won the triple jump for girls under 17 with a distance of 10.95 meters to better the10.90 meter mark established by fellow Marian and cousin Adisha Isuri Nilaweera in 2010.

P.G. Nirmali Madushika of Kathaluwa MV clocked 58.3 seconds in the 400meters for girls under 17 to erase the time of 60.7 seconds set by I.G. Indika Shrimali of Rajapakse Central College Weeraketiya in 2007. Y.K. Amila Prabodhini of Vidyaraja College Thawalama cleared 2.36meters in the pole vault event for girls under 19 to better the 2.30meter mark established by school mate Gayani Shashikala Sandamali in 2010.
