Parliamentary Select Committee on Road Accidents inactive
View(s):Among the many issues raised at the meeting were:
- There is a Parliamentary Select Committee on Traffic Accidents but this committee appointed several years back is inactive.
- Increasing road accidents
- Road rage
- Lack of road manners by motorists
- Onerous task of managing traffic during traffic snarls
- Breaking the rules: Traffic flows are permitted by the police in one direction from the Vilasitha Niwasa junction (Havelock Town) to Kirulapone bridge lights during rush hour (5-7 pm). However some motorists use this to drive on the wrong side of the road at other times too. Are the police unwittingly teaching motorists to break the rules?
- Bambalapitiya-Kollupitiya Galle road: Crossing from the Bambalapitiya junction (land side) to the sea side is hazardous. Similarly entering Galle road from the land or sea side and crossing to the other side requires a lot of skills and rule-breaking by motorists.
- On the same stretch: Few motorists follow the rule of driving on a single lane thereby causing congestion at some points. The same applies to the traffic flows from the Cinnamon Gardens police station to Thummulla junction.
- Parking is an issue that has not been resolved in the traffic management in Colombo with one-way roads, etc.
- One-way roads have not eased traffic flows. Rather it has increased the time taken to reach your destination and also increased fuel usage.
- Road development has given scant respect to pedestrians. After many months, signal lights have been installed at pedestrian crossings between Cinnamon Garden police and the Colombo University. But trying to cross Thurstan Road or Duplication road continues to be a hazard.
- Road development and management in the city have failed to consider the needs of public transport uses (buses/trains), pedestrians and cyclists.
- The Government and the Police have failed to consult traffic management experts in the development of roads in the city.
