View(s):The Alumni Association of the University of Kelaniya holds its Annual General Meeting today (Sunday) at the Pensioner’s Holiday Resort, Kelaniya, under the patronage of the Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Ven. Prof Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Mahanayake Thera, Chancellor of the University of Sabaragamuva, Ven. Prof Kumburugamuve Vajira Thera, Vice Chancellor Prof Sarath Amunugama and former Vice Chancellor Prof M.J.S. Wijeratne.The Alumni Association was inaugurated on October 4, 1986, by then Vice Chancellor Prof Indraratne Balasooriya with 92 graduates. During its 53 years, the university has produced over 75,000 graduates who have rendered great service in Sri Lanka and abroad.
The first president of the Alumni Association was Ven. Prof Kumburugamuwe Vajira Thera. Due to his untiring efforts, dedication and commitment, he has been able to achieve its objectives with the assistance of the first Secretary of the Association Prof Mangala Illangasinghe.Executive Committee Member of the Alumni Association, Joe Perera, in a media release said, “I believe it is our sacred responsibility as past students of this great historical and prestigious institute, to serve our motherland and humanity in general, while upholding the values and the knowledge imparted to us. It is also our prime duty to protect and enhance the image of this great corridor of knowledge, while contributing to its continuous improvement. The Alumni Association also provides the ideal platform to renew old friendships and interaction among our colleagues.”The Alumni Association greatly acknowledges and appreciates the blessings and guidance extended by the present chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Ven. Valamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thera, Chancellor of University of Sabaragamuwa and the first President of the Association, Ven. Prof Kumburugamuwe Vajira Thera, the present Vice Chancellor Prof Sarath Amunugama and the former Vice Chancellor Prof M.J.S. Wijeratne.
