RCMV Katukurunda gives prominence to discipline and religious activities
View(s):Katukurunda Roman Catholic College is the only Catholic Government School in the Kalutara District which has a history of more than 100 years.
A report in 1845 reveals that there were two schools in the Kalamulla Parish. The present school was started
in 1910 as a girls’ school under the leadership of father Rev.Fr. Pahamune, the parish priest of Kalamulla. There was also a separate school for boys and these two schools were combined in 1950 to operate as one school. In 1960 the school was acquired by the government. As a reputed Catholic School, Katukurunda RCMV celebrated its centenary in 2010.
With the passage of time, Katukurunda RCMV was handed over to Mr. Pubudu Sampath. Under his guidance, the school is now heading towards greater development and prosperity. At present, the school shelters over 860 students enjoying educational facilities guided by a staff of about 43 teachers who are dedicated to the task of providing wisdom.
Today, Katukurunda RCMV provides quality education with a complete infrastructure including a well equipped library, Computer unit, science laboratory and an aesthetic unit.
Katukurunda RCMV holds a unique name in the district for sheltering and providing special education for disabled students at their “Marksri Unit”. They reaped their best harvest from them in 2012 as Dulanjalee Ariyatilaka, an armless girl, who writes with her leg, obtained 6As, 2Bs and 1C setting an example to all the other
students. Dulanjali was also recognised for her social talents and was asked to act in a movie called ‘Samanala Thatu’ (Butterfly Wings). She won a special award for her contribution for arts.
In the history of the school which spans more than 100 years, Katukurunda RCMV has made many achievements in the academic field as well as in extra-curricular activities. The Grade 5 scholarship results reached a good standard while the G.C.E.(O/L) results rocketed to the top level. Annually they started enjoying some remarkable results in A/L as well. Pasindu Deshan obtained 167 marks in the Grade 5 scholarship examination in 2012 and ten other students obtained 100 marks at the same
examination.
Extra and Co – Curricular activities play a key role in Katukurunda RCMV. The students are famous for their Cricketing, Volleyball and Elle talents. The under 15 Cricket, Elle and Volleyball teams have done well in Zonal and District level competitions.
Katukurunda RCMV students have earned a reputation in aesthetic fields as well. The College dancing troupe was placed first in the Western Province Competition in 2009 and in 2011 they were able to bag the first place at the All Island School Dancing competition. In 2013 the dancing troop won the first place in the Zone and is now looking forward to face the provincial challenge.
The music group has recorded many successful achievements. In 2008 the music group emerged first in the island. Since then they have performed well at all Zonal, District, Provincial and Island level competitions.
The artists of Katukurunda RCMV won a cash award of Rs.20,000/- at the Art
competition organised by the Department of Education in 2011 and they were able to win first, fifth and sixth places at the National Competition of “Signal Sinaha Bovewa , 2010”.
Kolitha Hiran of Grade 11 won first at the Provincial level “New Invention” Science competition while the IT team took fourth place and 0.4 million rupees at the National ICT Excellence Award, 2009/2010.
Giving prominence to discipline and religious activities, Katukurunda Roman Catholic College is leading their students to shine in the future.
