Military students of the Medical Faculty at the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) are to undergo their clinical training at the Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital (SJGH) in terms of a memorandum of understanding now ready for signature by the two sides.
The draft MoU states that it is the obligation of the SJGH to establish four clinical units as Professorial Units so medical undergraduates of KDU can undergo their professorial clinical training.

It also states the hospital needs to provide a suitable place to conduct lectures for the medical undergraduates of KDU.
The KDU in return will be paying Rs.25, 000 per annum for the provision of services to each student training at the hospital.
The University will also remunerate the clinical teachers of SJGH at the rate of Rs.1,500 per hour for lectures and Rs.1, 500 per diem for clinical training.

A Cabinet decision was taken on May 21 this year to recognize the Degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University by the Sri Lanka Medical Council. The first batch of Officer Cadets of KDU’s Faculty of Medicine will receive their Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degree (MBBS) in 2014. The KDU enlisted the first batch of 25 Military Medical Students (MMS) in 2009.

The KDU website stated that ‘once the immediate/minimum service requirements are fulfilled, KDU could enlist civilian under graduates/foreign military students for human resources development in the health sector.

“They could be in the volunteer force and deployed during emergency situations in the country. They will be fee levying students,” it stated.  Sri Lanka Medical Council Registrar (SLMC) Dr.Ananda Herath said the University’s Medical Faculty has no recognition by the SLMC and are awaiting amendments to the Medical Ordinance.

Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital Director Dr. Shavendra Gamage said the draft proposal has been received from the University and discussions will be held with the consultants and the hospital board and a clause included that this training should not disrupt training of students attached to the Sri Jayewardhanapura University’s Medical Faculty.

Prof. Mohan de Silva, Dean of the Medical Faculty, Sri Jayewardenepura University said the Dean of KDU’s Medical Faculty Prof. T.R. Weerasooriya has called for a meeting next week to discuss the proposed training.  The Kotelawala Defence Academy’s Teaching Hospital is being built in a 56 acre-block in Werahera at a cost of US $ 202 million.
