Lankan corporate governance advocates at international governance meeting
View(s):Dr Nirosha Hewa Wellalage, Senior lecturer in Finance at the University of Waikato Management School in New Zealand, was recently awarded a scholarship by the UK-based International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN) to attend its annual conference in June in New York.
She is the third corporate governance advocate from Sri Lanka to be awarded a scholarship to attend the annual sessions which are held in different parts of the world. Previous Sri Lankan awardees were Prof. Lakshman Watawala, President of Association of Certified Managements Accountants of Sri Lanka and Dr. Kumudini Heenetigala, Research Fellow at Victoria University in Australia – both in 2009.
The ICGN, founded in 1995, is not-for-profit organisation to raise the standards of corporate governance worldwide. Its work involves encouraging cross-border dialogue at conferences and influences corporate governance public policy through ICGN committees. It promotes best practice guidance, encourages leadership development and keeps members informed on emerging issues through their publications and their website. Dr. Heenetigala, who has presented a number of papers in Sri Lanka and overseas on corporate governance of listed companies and small businesses, is also the ICGN Country Correspondent for Sri Lanka and responsible for reports on corporate governance initiatives of Sri Lanka.
Both Kumudini and Nirosha are both past pupils of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo.
