Study Abroad? Select Career first and pathway to it rather than merely selecting a course – Advice by Edlocate
View(s):The London A/L results 2013 will be released in mid August. Most of you together with your parents are considering your options – Which country to study? Which University to enrol in? Which course to follow?
Over the past 13 years we have seen students making wrong choices of courses and as a result being very unhappy with not much they could do to rectify the mistake. There are many reasons for making a mistake at course selection: not having sufficient educational background, parental pressure, not realising what the actual strengths are, ”go with the wind”, migration being the aim, prestige, limited English communication skills required for some professions etc.
It is therefore necessary to meet good, experienced and capable counsellors and discuss career options and get excellent guidance as the first step. It is only then that a student should decide on the course. It is the long years of experience of counsellors at Edlocate who have seen thousands of students being handled over 13 years that could offer such guidance with confidence. With our international office in Australia we have met many students, seen a lot of success stories and numerous failures too, which are all used in providing career guidance to new students.
Careers in Engineering are excellent if you are good in mathematics and like outdoor work at the start of the career. Medical Sciences have excellent career opportunities but selection has to be based on ones abilities and passion. You need to spend a sizeable sum of money to be a medical doctor but if the sole aim is to earn lot of money through such career it is not possible as earning capabilities increase only in later years with specialisation. Dental and Veterinary doctors offer rewarding careers.
Medical scientists and several allied medical professions like physiotherapist, Radiographers, Biotechnology etc offer extremely rewarding career opportunities in all developed countries. Business, Management, Economic and Commerce studies are excellent if you have excellent leadership qualities, English communication skills and will to succeed. The world’s best paid professional are in the corporate sector. Some want to study a discipline to be successful academics especially in universities and after years to rise up to be professors/ deans and even vice chancellors. Though they may not get big salary packets at the beginning of their careers they get lot of satisfaction through teaching and research. Legal studies is yet another area that attracts those who aspire to have great careers especially in the corporate sector which is new breed high end legal professionals. There are other professions like Nursing, Pre- Primary and secondary school teaching, Town and Country planning and Architecture.
On the other hand there are specialist careers as Aviation pilots/ Hospitality professions, Hairdressers and beauticians which lead to careers to those having a liking to such disciplines. Trade skills such as Plumbing, Electricians, Air conditioning and Refrigeration technicians, Tile layers etc offer rewarding careers especially to be independent and manage own business after a period of supervised work and after a time with combined trade qualifications and work experience can advance to be professional engineers.
It is the ability of Edlocate counsellors to provide proper career guidance to students over 13 years that has made universities it represent appreciate the role played by us. This was yet again evident when the University of South Australia awarded Edlocate with a special certificate at its recently concluded international work shop in Kuala Lumpur which award was collected by Dilani Wickramasinghe Senior Assistant Manager/ Counsellor on behalf of Edlocate.
