Shake your booty ELDA Championship
View(s):The third consecutive ‘El Latino Dancesport Championship’ 2013 organised by the El Latino Dance Academy which was held at S. Thomas’ Sports complex in Mount Lavinia recently drew keen interests among dance enthusiasts.
Awards were given for 24 different categories of dances for the students from four dancing schools that competed at this Dancing Championship event. The dance schools were Vision Dance-Nagombo, Antonio Dance School, Ex-Arena Dance School- Nugegdoa and the Artistic Dance World from Negombo. Among the areas that the participants competed in were Latin and ballroom dancing, such as Salsa and the Viennese Waltz.
Kevin Nugara, the Director of the El Latino Dance Academy and Chairman of the organising Committee said that the there is growing interest in such competitions and there is also growing interest in social dancing in the country.‘It is inspiring to see that there is an increase in the number of participants taking part in such competitions and we are privileged to provide them the centre stage to showcase their potential and passion for dance’ he added.
He also thanked the professional dance teachers for their support and assistance to make the event a success. There were five judges (four foreign and one Sri Lankan) at the event. They were Barry Winters from the UK, Angelina Tan from Malaysia, Belman Salihovic and Philip Nicholas from Australia and Dharshana Wijesooriya. Kevin who has been in the field for nearly 25 years was also feted at the ceremony when his grateful students decided to announce that he has been honoured with their titles namely Deshamanya, Kala Keerthi and Lanka Thilaka for his contribution to dance over the years.
Kevin still continues to represent the country at foreign dance competitions at a professional level and will do again in October this year.
