The police were yesterday matching images captured by CCTV cameras during the attack on Malaka Silva – son of Public Relations Minister Meryvn Silva on Monday, a senior investigator with the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) said. He said the CCTV cameras installed inside the premises of the up market clothes store Odel near the Town Hall and the devices located on the main road close to where the incident had taken place had recorded the incident but identification of the suspects was difficult.

“At the moment we are using high technology to match the images from separate angles in a bid to make an identification. The registration number of the vehicle is very clear but follow up investigations revealed that it was a fake. It is clear that we are faced with a professional goon squad who knew exactly what they were doing and the modus operandi used in their successful getaway,” he told the Sunday Times.

Some six persons, including private security personnel attached to the clothes shop and other minor employees have also been questioned in this connection but none of them were able to provide a clear picture on the incident that took place around 4 p.m. when the victim was leaving the premises, he said.“At the moment were are following up several leads but so far there is no evidence to link any person or persons or even the motive for the attack and therefore there have been no arrests in this connection so far,” he said.

Meanwhile Minister Silva told the Sunday Times that he was confident that the CCD would crack the case adding that it was a well planned case to cause serious harm to his son if not kill him. When asked if members of the security forces could have been involved in the incident-the Minister said that he did not wish to comment as the police were investigating the matter.

On admission to a private hospital soon after the attack Malaka Silva said that those behind the incident were security forces personnel and they intended to kill him. However he did not elaborate. The CCD is conducting further investigations with the assistance of the Cinnamon Gardens Police.
