Appeal Court to hear petition requesting NPC polls be put off
View(s):The petition seeking to indefinitely postpone the Northern Provincial Council election will be supported before the Court of Appeal next Tuesday.
Petitioner Jayantha Liyanage, general secretary of the Sihala Jathika Peramuna wanted the election indefinitely postponed till the Government takes some corrective measures.
The completion of de-mining and the resettlement of the displaced Sinhalese and Muslims in the province were among the corrective measures, Mr. Liyanage pointed out. There are also some defects in the Constitution that would allow political parties with separatist agendas to threaten the territorial integrity of the country, he said adding that these constitutional defects should be remedied before holding the election.
Certain Tamil political parties with separatist agendas also have an undue advantage over the other parties, he alleged. Therefore the election should not be held until the corrective measures are taken by the Government, Mr. Liyanage stated. He was seeking an order prohibiting the holding of the election.Mr.. Liyanage also sought to restrain the respondents from holding the election till the case is fully heard and finally determined. He cited Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya and the Attorney General as respondents.
