Await drama and spectacle with Caliban’s Rebellion
View(s):It’s barely a year since the heady aftermath of Rag-the Musical and director Jehan Aloysius is already launching headfirst into the remake of another previous hit-‘Caliban’s Rebellion’ which will go on the boards from August 23-25 at the Lionel Wendt.
This re-imagining of the 2008 classic by Jehan’s company CentreStage Productions is loosely based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Caliban’s Rebellion follows a sub plot of the original fantasy; this is the story of demonised slave Caliban who rebels against malevolent wizard Prospero in an effort to reclaim his island from his European master. “Those who are familiar with Shakespeare’s Tempest may very well discover new dimensions to the characters, their histories and motives while watching Caliban’s Rebellion,” says Jehan, who also scripted the play. “The production highlights the master/slave relationship during the colonial era, as well as themes of race and identity.”
With Rag, audiences were treated to a heady combination of dance, music and theatre and Caliban aims to please likewise. We’re told that spectacular costumes, giant puppets and exotic settings are set to convert the Wendt into a kaleidoscope of colour and movement. These all-important extras are to complement the company’s trademark of original music, choreography and dizzying acrobatics in productions. And with a potential turn in the plot this time around, Caliban’s rebellion seems a promising production to look forward to this month.
Taking on the main roles are Laknath Seneviratne, Aaron Chitranjan, Rebecca Munasinghe, Niren Ranasinghe, Anabella Brochard, Eshan Fernando, Natasha Amarasekara and Jehan himself. Await more details in the Plus and Magazine!
