View(s):The Sri Lanka Scrabble League will conduct the Sri Lanka Open International Scrabble Championship from August 9 – 11 at the Global Towers, Marine Drive, Colombo 6
Over twenty five international players are expected to take part in this tournament. There are players such as reigning World Champion Nigel Richards Three-time Gulf Champion and ranked 5th in the World Championships, Akshay Bhandarkar, Sherwin Rodrigues and Pichai Limprasert..
Sri Lanka will be represented by the premier local Scrabble players such as reigning Sri Lanka Champion and World Championship representative Lakshan Wanniarachchi.
Twenty-five games will be played over three days, with a total prize money packet of SLR 700,000 to be awarded.
This is the 5th occasion Sri Lanka is hosting its international championship, which is now a regular tournament in the global Scrabble calendar.
The past champions of this tournament have been Ranganathan Chakravarty of India (2003), Nigel Richards of New Zealand (2009 and 2010) and Pichai Limprasert of Thailand (2011).
The Sri Lanka Scrabble League (S.L.S.L.) is a non-profit organization that has taken a keen interest in promoting the game of Scrabble in Sri Lanka. Scrabble can be a useful tool to develop vocabulary and analytical skills, in addition to being a thoroughly enjoyable word-game. The S.L.S.L. has been home for quite a few world class Sri Lankan Scrabble Players such as Naween Fernando (3rd in the World Championships, 2005), Missaka Warusawithana, Harshan Lamabadusuriya and Suresh Chinnaiyah.
