The Board of Investment (BOI) has allocated 430 hectares in Hambantota, adjoining the Suriyawewa Stadium, for the construction of an IT park and the establishment of local and foreign universities and private education institutes.
Investment Promotion Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told the Education Times that investors have expressed interest in several projects and discussions are presently being held.

He said that the IT Park will consist of a number of Information Technology firms from several countries.

“There will be large number of employees and students coming to the area. Therefore there is also a plan to construct apartment complexes for residential use,” the Minister said.

In addition, the universities and higher educational institutes will also be able to use the Suriyawewa Stadium for their sports events.
Furthermore, Minister Yapa stated that a fully-equipped sport complex will be constructed in the area with indoor facilities.
The Government believes that the proposal will attract investments amounting to over 400 million US dollars and as such is offering investors tax concessions.

The main aim of this project is to promote outstation educational establishments rather than limiting tertiary education to Colombo and its suburbs.

He said that interested parties could visit the sites allocated for these educational institutes.
