Public school principals with six years’ service set for transfer

Principals in leading public schools who have completed six years of service will be transferred within the course of this year, a senior official from the Ministry of Education recently revealed.
According to the source, the majority of leading government schools in Colombo and other main cities have principals who have been in service for more than six years. The planned reassignments are scheduled to come into effect after the third and final school term.
As part of this reform, the Education Ministry has classified schools under several categories that dictate a principal’s duration of service.

Principals in ‘most preferred schools’ can serve a maximum of six years while those in ‘preferred schools’ can stay on for eight years of service.

However, the move has come in for criticism from Teacher Services Union General Secretary, Mahinda Jayasinghe, who charges that such action is ill-conceived and creates an opening for corruption.

“Despite the plan to transfer school principals, the Education Ministry does not have a proper transfer policy. The Transfer Board has been cancelled for more than a year. This will lead to unethical transfers,” Mr. Jayasinghe stated.
