RMIT University, Australia appoints an Adjunct Professor

Dr. Rohana Kuruppu has been appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Fashion and Textiles of the RMIT University of Melbourne Australia from 1st July 2013. Dr. Kuruppu will work along with the textile scientists who are in the advanced materials laboratory of the RMIT and carryout research on woven fabrics. He teaches fabric technology and textile quality management at the Bachelor of Applied Science (textile technology) degree of RMIT.

Dr. Kuruppu graduated in textile technology from Derby University (formerly of Derby Lonsdale College of Higher Education) UK in 1977 where he was awarded the “Albert Thompson Memorial “ prize for outstanding success in textile studies throughout the course. Later he obtained an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Clothing from Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. He pursued studies in postgraduate and was conferred with Master of Science in Textiles from the Faculty of Pure and Applied Chemistry of University of Strathclyde UK in 1982.

He had a rare distinction when he was called upon to receive the most prestigious postgraduate award, ‘Cunningham Medal’ for his excellent performance in textile studies at the university.

He was conferred Doctor of Technology (honoris cousa) from the Open University of Sri Lanka in 2005. He then obtained the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the RMIT University, Melbourne Australia in 2009.

Dr. Kuruppu has over 50 publications and presentations and he will continue to add to this list. He has published a book titled ‘Facets of the clothing industry of Sri Lanka’. He is one of the members of the editorial board of the Textile Institute, UK for its journal, Textile Progress. He also has supervised over 200 research based dissertations of Bachelor’s degree.

The Textile Institute, Manchester, UK has recognized his services and offered him with two coveted awards to him. They are The Textile Institute Service Medal in 2010 and the other was The Textile Institute medal in 2011. Dr. Kuruppu was conferred with National Honours by the HE the President of Sri Lanka in 2005 at the investiture ceremony held at BMICH in 2005.

Dr. Kuruppu along with Brigadier (Dr) H I K Fernando was instrumental in setting up Ranaviru Apparels of the Sri Lanka Army in 1992, an institution dedicated for injured soldiers. He was the pioneer in setting up Enterprise Based training (EBT) centres across the country in clothing factories.

Dr. Kuruppu started his career in 1971 in a weaving factory in Ratmalana and then became an Assistant Lecturer in textiles at the University of Moratuwa during the period of 1978 to 1984. He became the founder director at the Clothing Industry training Institute in Ratmalana in 1984. He was appointed CEO of Brandix College of Clothing Technology in 1996 to date. He is the Chairman of the Textile Institute Sri Lanka section.
