Jaffna is set to open its doors to the world of motor racing for the first time as the Jaffna Speed Festival, which consists of a motor race, a cycle race and a marathon, gets under way on September 14 and 15 in the city.Organisers Carlton Motor Sports Club (CMS) have opened the motor race to Sri Lankans and attached it to the Sri Lanka Automobile Sports calendar. The cycle race and the marathon however will be restricted to only residents of Jaffna.
Twenty-five cars and eight bikes will compete in the race, which will be divided into several stages over a distance of 200 km.
