OREL Corp’s new techno to connect office number to mobile phone
View(s):OREL Corporation, Sri Lanka’s largest player in the electrical manufacturing sector, has embarked on a ground-breaking business venture with a futuristic view to integrate two totally different industries – electrical manufacturing and mobile phone industry – into one common platform in the near future.
It has signed an agreement with India’s Spice Mobile, a BK Modi Group venture, which has a strong presence in the sub-continent. Under the agreement, Orel Corporation, in collaboration with Spice Mobile, will set up its newest arm which will take the brand ‘Orel’ into Sri Lanka’s mobile phone market, the local company said in an announcement.
Kushan Kodituwakku, Managing Director of Orel Corporation, explained why the company entered the new industry “some may view this as an unconventional move; which is true to some extent. But, there is a new global trend where electrical manufacturing industry is developing seamless connectivity with Telecommunication and IT industries. After two or three years from now, people will operate their domestic electrical devices through mobile phones.
For instance, people will switch lights on, using mobile phones, without moving an inch from their seats. When they buy electrical items, they will also want to buy mobile phones capable of supporting such operations, and the two industries will go hand in hand. Consumers may want to buy electrical items and mobile phones under the same roof. What we are doing right now is preparing the ground for that ‘future.’ It is a diversification with a clear-cut game plan.” He said the new business venture will start operations within the next two months.
Parallel to this development, plans are afoot to introduce a new technology to Sri Lanka where a user can connect his office number to the mobile phone, or his mobile phone number to the PC, Laptop or whatever mobile device he carries. This will ensure the accessibility of a person, regardless of his location. This, according to Mr. Kodituwakku, will take Sri Lanka’s telecommunication industry to a new dimension.
