High-flying A/L students join CA Sri Lanka’s inaugural Degree in Applied Accounting
View(s):The inaugural degree of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) received a tremendous boost with an
impressive number of high-flying students who performed outstandingly at last year’s advanced level examination joining the programme.
Lectures for the CA Sri Lanka BSc. in applied accounting which commenced last month saw the participation of a vibrant group of students hailing from across the country including Colombo.
Miss. Harshani Senanayake, a student of Good Shepherd Convent, Kandy, who obtained 3 A passes for accounting, business studies and economics at the 2012 GCE Advanced level examination said she decided to follow the degree offered by CA Sri Lanka primarily due to the recognition of the institute as a prestigious accounting body in the country.
Miss. Senanayake’s father who is an accountant and mother a doctor strongly believes that the CA Sri Lanka degree programme which has also been approved by the University Grants Commission will give her wide exposure thereby helping her realize her career ambitions of becoming a globally sought after accountant.
“I believe my education at CA Sri Lanka would help me gain more exposure and opportunities which will help me realize my career ambition of becoming an accountant,” she said.
CA Sri Lanka is the only professional institute in the country currently offering both a professional qualification as well as a degree in accounting.
The primary aim of the degree programme is to create employable graduates with the required skills, competencies and industry knowledge to fulfill a successful accounting career. Upon completion, students will gain extensive knowledge and required skills in accounting practices, as this is the only degree programme in Sri Lanka that enables students to gain knowledge in the field of ‘Applied Accounting.’
CA Sri Lanka President, Mr. Sujeewa Rajapakse noted that the BSc. in applied accounting which is offered as a 3 year general degree programme and or a 4 year special degree programme is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka.
“Unlike most other degrees offered both here and abroad, the degree is specially designed to produce employable graduates with the required skills, competencies and industry knowledge to be successful accountants,” he said.
Mr. Rajapakse noted that CA Sri Lanka is no stranger to the tertiary education sector in this country; owing to its position of being one of the largest tertiary education providers in Sri Lanka outside the university system. “At present we have a massive student population of over 41,000 students who are studying our globally recognized chartered accountancy professional qualification apart from our degree programme,” Mr. Rajapakse noted.
Chief Executive Officer of CA Sri Lanka, Mr. Aruna Alwis noted that throughout the institute’s five decade long existence, the institute has constantly assured quality education that is accessible to all.
“Therefore, as a step forward and to meet the continuous market demands, the institute introduced the degree programme which can be followed both on a part time or full time basis. Lectures are conducted within a luxurious environment with the required infrastructure and modern facilities to ensure a rewarding learning experience for the benefit of the students who are following the programme,” he added.
Lectures are conducted in English and are designed mainly based on the core subject disciplines of financial accounting, management
accounting and financial management. In addition, there are several sub-core disciplines which are quantitative and management techniques, business economics, information and communication technology, management and law. The auxiliary discipline is business communication.
Throughout the curricula, emphasis has been given to the development of skills and core competencies in critical and creative thinking, analytical ability, commitment to life-long learning, adaptability to situations, negotiations, interpersonal relations and team work, time and stress management, problem-solving skills and leadership skills.
The development of skills will be embedded in the teaching and learning processes of the course units and assessed through the internship and skills development programme at the end of each semester in the third and the final year. Lectures are conducted by a fully-fledged faculty comprising of qualified professors, senior lecturers and industry professionals who are experts in the area.
