Students from Horizon Campus, who are presently reading for a University of Lonndon LL.B. through the University of London International Programmes, took part in a two week summer camp in Malaysia, in July of this year. Five students and a faculty member visited Malaysia, as part of a summer transfer programme, involving Crescendo International College, Malaysia, whose students also visited Sri Lanka for a two week period, earlier in the summer. The summer camp was funded through a Global Network Development Grant awarded by the University of London International Programmes.
For 155 years, the University of London International Programmes has provided a way in which students can study for a prestigious University of London degree without coming to London. One of the many unique features of the International Programmes is its global network of over 130 teaching institutions provided support to its students. The purpose of these grants is to support these institutions in working collaboratively to develop and deliver projects that will not only strengthen their individual institution but the global network of institutions as a whole.
In early 2013, the University invited teaching institutions to submit an application for one of three grants. More specifically, they were invited to submit proposals for projects that would achieve one or more of the following objectives:
4Create opportunities for student mobility across the International Programmes.
4 Enhance the employability of International Programmes students.
4 Develop leadership capacity within the network of teaching institutions.
As acknowledged by the University of London, a high number of good quality proposals were received from institutions across the world. Horizon Campus was therefore extremely proud to have been selected as one of the best three projects and receive a grant.
Apart from the experience that the students received in meeting students from other international institutions, they also got the opportunity of being a part of a research project which encapsulates the subject matter they have dealt with, within the past year of their academic life. Added to the academic and social benefits that the students would receive from this venture, is the fact that the entire cost of travel & accommodation in Malaysia was borne through the funds awarded to Horizon Campus via the Global Network Development Grant.
As this project is the first of its kind for students studying for a degree with the University of London International Programmes, it is the hope of Horizon Campus to build on this experience and develop further ties with International institutions, in order that future opportunities of study-transfer could be provided for students who read for a degree at Horizon Campus.
Shashini Wickramasekara, Dilki Punchihewa, Nuwandi Panagoda, Nadia Ousmand, Amaya Karunarathna, were accompanied by Dr. Ruwan Perera, Associate Dean and Ms. Lalani Paranawithana, Student Cordinator, on this two week study tour to Malaysia.
The experiences that the students received from this programme was duly summarized by Dilki, when she had this to say about the 4 week long exchange programme;
“Starting from 8th of July to 5th of August has been an interesting 4 weeks for me thanks to student exchange program between Horizon Campus, Sri Lanka and Crescendo College Malaysia, arranged by the University of London.
During the first 2 weeks of the program 3 LLB students from Crescendo came to Sri Lanka. Being with them for two weeks here, we showed them how our country function and how the law works in Sri Lanka. Not only about law, but I think we managed to show them a glimpse of Sri Lankan culture and history too.
During the next two weeks of the program 5 LLB students from horizon including myself, went to Malaysia. The lecturers and student from Crescendo welcomed us warm heartedly. Studying about the law in Malaysia was one to experience. Because it was not just books and presentations But also lot of practical knowledge. We were able to visit the parliament, supreme courts and high courts of Malaysia as well as Singapore. Not only law, we also learnt a little bit of the culture, customs, traditions and history of Malaysia.
At the end of 4 weeks we did 2 presentations. One on Sri Lanka about criminal justice systems of UK, Malaysia and Sri Lanka and other one in Malaysia about comparison of the death penalty in Malaysia, Sri Lanka and UK.
The experiences I got over these 4 weeks cannot be summarized in just a few words. It will take years to share the experiences. And I feel so lucky to get this opportunity. This summer camp was the root for friendship that will definitely bear flowers in future.
Personally I believe to be a lawyer, not only theory knowledge but also I should be able to stand on my feet, be independent with proper communicative skills as well as have an overall knowledge about the field. And this summer camp definitely helped me in polishing those skills.
University of London & Horizon Campus; thank you so much for giving this opportunity for me and my friends from Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Hope you will have more programs like this in future.”
