SIBA Convocation and the International Buddhist Conference
View(s):SIBA holds its first ever convocation on the 20th August, 2013 at the SIBA Auditorium from 8.30 a.m onwards. It will be followed by the International Buddhist Conference on the 20th and 21st of August, 2013. This particular event marks the 260th anniversary of the establishment of SIAM mahanikaya in Sri Lanka to ordinate Buddhist monks and revive the defunct Upasampada or higher ordination of monks.There will be more than 200 prospective graduates participating in the convocation. Most venerableMahanayaketheras of Malwatte and AsgiriyaChapters will patronise this event. Hon.S.B. Dissanayake, the Minister of Higher Education will be the chief Guest to inauguratethe conference. Hon.DiyawadanaNilame,Dr.PradeepNilangaDela, the President of SIBAand the Chairmanof Board of Directors, SIBA will grace theoccasion. He is the sole creator of the conceptof SriLanka international Buddhist Academy, Pallekele ably assisted by Rector of SIBA, Dr.Upali Sedera.
The theme of the conference will be “International Exchange of Buddhism in Global Context”. Most venerable Rector of Mahachulongkornarajavidyalaya University will attend the conference .There will be 28 paper presenters in all.The conference will be attended by nearly 1000 invited guests and delegates from 9 countries.SIBA – has a vision of its own and is vying to be leading International Buddhist University in Sri Lanka. It is established on a picturesque location in Pallekele bordering the Kandy – Teldeniya high way with a vision to teach degree, Diploma, and certificate courses in Buddhist Studies, Oriental languages and, Buddhist Counselling , Yoga Meditation , foreign languages, English and Information Technology.SIBA has been accepted as a Degree awarding university status by the University Grants Commission, Sri Lanka. The University is affiliated to the MahachulongkornarajaVidyalaya University in Thailand for degree programmes. SIBA through its research projects, DCI translate Pali Tripitaka and commentaries into English and Sinhala .SIBA also is affiliated to Dhammachai Institute of Wat Phra Dhammakaya, Thailand for research activities. Basing on the Motto ‘Siba Is the Light of the World’itattempts to strongly formulate the leadership programs with utmost commitment and dedication.
SIBA through its academic programmes is designed to help students both at home and overseas.It prepares students to gain skills in Sinhala, Tamil, English, Sanskrit, Japanese and Chinese. The prime aim of SIBA is to equip students with linguistic and leadership skills so that the graduates would work in Sri Lanka and other countries and they would continue to do further studies at Postgraduate level at home and abroad. It has close collaboration programs with the MCU and IBC in Thailand, Virginia TechUniversity and Westchester University inUSA, and the University ofHamburg, Germany.
