148-year-old Police Ordinance to be overhauled
The 148-year-old Police Ordinance is to be overhauled to empower law enforcement officers to crack down more effectively on criminal activity. The Ministry of Defence and Urban Development has appointed two official committees to identify changes required. One comprises representatives of the MoD, the Attorney Generals Department and a senior police officer. The second committee comprises retired and serving police officers.
The Police Ordinance has so far undergone at least 25 amendments but a senior Police official involved in the proposed changes said more were necessary. He pointed out that some fines in the Ordinance were ludicrously low. Ahead of formulating the final changes, he said, the Police Department would invite public representations.
The main Committee comprises Hariguptha Rohanadeera, Legal Advisor, Ministry of Defence & Urban Development, Yasantha Kodagoda, Deputy Solicitor General, Anusha A Munasinghe, Senior Asst. Secretary, (Legal) Ministry of Justice, Deepthika Kulasena, Senior Assistant, Legal Draftsman, Gamini Disanayaka, DIG Legal Range and Senarath Jayasundara, Attorney-at-Law.
The Interim Committee is made up of Jagath Abeysirigunawardana, Senior DIG North Western Province, Gamini Disanayaka, DIG Legal Range, D.Gajasinghe, SSP, Director Legal, G.H.M.B.Siriwardana, SP, Director, Public Relations, Gunasena Thenabadu, Retired DIG, Punya De Silva, Retired DIG and M.K.D.W.Amerasinghe, Retired DIG.
