‘Harmony Centres’ in campuses to resolve student issues
View(s):The University Grants Commission (UGC) is to expand ‘Harmony Centres’ within local universities to resolve student issues and improve reconciliation, officials of the Commission said.
These Harmony Centres were first put up by the UGC early this year, following several unruly actions by university students.
According to UGC officials, the centres will play a bigger role in reconciliation of students, and university heads have grasped the concept openly.
The UGC has appointed two committees to maintain the centres which are the Advisory Committee chaired by UGC Chairperson, Prof S.S.M.K. Kshanika Hirimburegama and a Steering Committee headed by its Vice Chairman Prof Ranjith Senarathne. Other members of the Advisory Committee include Chairman of the Committee of the Vice Chancellors and Directors, Prof Senarathne, Vice Chancellors of the University of Jaffna, Eastern University and South Eastern University, the Inspector General of Police and Commander of the Sri Lanka Army.
The Advisory Committee will provide guidance and direction to the universities’ management, and provide assistance to ensure university harmony.
Vice Chancellors and Student Counselors will be included in the Steering Committee to implement the Harmony Centres’ plans.
